Why the Week of Accessibility?
The Week of Accessibility encourages organizations to take steps to improve their accessibility. 2 million Dutch people have a disability that makes cultural visits more challenging. This includes physical and mental disabilities, as well as low literacy. This initiative calls for extra attention to these individuals so that everyone can feel included in art and culture.
Want to experience accessibility in practice?
To experience this accessibility in practice, you can, for example, visit the Media Museum of Beeld en Geluid in Hilversum. They have taken various measures to make their offerings more accessible:
- Consideration has been given to assistance dogs and wheelchairs
- Hearing-impaired visitors can enable subtitles for a better film experience
- Visitors can download the museum app to listen to audio on their own device
- Wall texts and signs with larger fonts and contrast make the museum more accessible for visually impaired visitors.
Need funding to make your organization more accessible? Some municipalities offer special subsidies to improve accessibility.
Want to empathize with the target group?
In The Hague, you can visit two photo exhibitions at the City Hall on Spui on October 3 and 6. Five inspiring individuals with disabilities will share their stories through special exhibitions. This way, you'll learn what these people need to fully experience culture.
Digital accessibility and inclusion
Accessibility extends not only to physical museums and exhibitions but also to the digital domain. Is your website, app, or ticket shop accessible to blind and visually impaired individuals? Images, animations, text, and forms are often easy to read for people without disabilities, but how about navigating your website for those who cannot see?
