DEN Talk: AI & Copyright in Studio Erwin Olaf

8 June 2026, 13:00-16:00

AI learns from art, but where is the boundary?

Imagine: your marketing team generates a campaign image in the style of an artist from your collection. Is that an innovative way to make your collection visible, or does your organization face legal risks?

Generative AI makes it increasingly easy to create images that reference existing artists, collections, and styles. This offers opportunities for audience engagement and creation, but also raises questions about copyright, consent, ownership, and the position of creators.

During this DEN Talk, organized by DEN and Studio Erwin Olaf, you will explore what AI means for creators, image rights, collections, and cultural organizations. Based on Erwin Olaf's decision to make his visual material available for AI, we will discuss the question: what is possible, what is allowed, and what do you want as an organization?

What can you expect?

A dynamic panel discussion led by Dymphie Braun, where different perspectives come together and there is room for in-depth questions and interaction.

You will get:

  • Insights into the tension between protection and openness of work
  • Concrete examples from the practices of creators, institutions, and AI artists
  • Explanation of current legal frameworks, such as the Copyright Act and the AI Act
  • Reflection on the role of organizations: what can you do, what is allowed, and what do you want
  • Space to ask questions and actively participate in the discussion

With contributions from Studio Erwin Olaf, Pictoright, art collective Pensive Vivifier, and DEN copyright advisor Andrea Langendoen.
