DEN joins NCDD: sustainable digital transformation as a shared mission

Since June 1, 2025, DEN has been a participant in the National Coalition for Sustainable Digitalization (NCDD). With this step, we strengthen our network and collaborate with other public and private parties towards a future-proof, digital, and sustainable society. Within this coalition, DEN represents the digital cultural sector.

The NCDD is the national organization with expertise on the twin transition challenge and aims to address the main bottlenecks surrounding sustainable digitalization. The coalition brings together government, businesses, educational and research institutions, and social organizations.

The cultural sector can only fully capitalize on the opportunities of digital transformation if it takes into account the environmental impact of the sector and works on targeted solutions. DEN promotes this and advocates this vision. “Our participation in the NCDD is a logical step in this,” says Maaike Verberk, director at DEN. Within the NCDD, expertise on sustainable digitalization is bundled at a public-private level. “There is also much for DEN to learn here. By sharing knowledge with experts from other sectors, we develop new insights and tools that we can share with cultural professionals.”

“We aim for digital transformation and the sustainability transition to reinforce each other as a twin transition. By providing knowledge and tools, we help cultural professionals make sustainable choices in the steps they take to achieve the goals outlined in their digital strategy.”

“We see that participants within the NCDD, just like at DEN, think in terms of possibilities and opportunities of digitalization, not limitations. In some cases, digital transformation actually contributes to sustainability. With this, we want to inspire cultural professionals to embrace innovation,” Maaike continues.

As a first step, DEN will delve into the recently presented Sustainable IT Impact Assessment (SIIA) (opens in new tab), a guideline from the NCDD to make IT more sustainable and to use it for a sustainable organization. We are exploring how we can translate this into cultural organizations in the Netherlands that want to work on sustainable digitalization.

“The process of digital transformation in an organization is 90% people work and 10% use of technology,” says Maaike. “In the choices made during the digital transformation process, we help cultural organizations make these as sustainable as possible.”

Within our own organization, we also critically examine our impact. For example, we measure the sustainability of our operations, with an extra focus on IT. The knowledge we gain from this, we actively share with relevant target groups within the sector.
