White paper: Exploration of the impact of AI on the cultural sector in the Netherlands

For a long time, Artificial Intelligence (hereafter AI) was a vague promise of the future from Silicon Valley, and it was scientists who experimented with it. Partly due to the launch of ChatGPT 3.5 in November ‘22, the awareness and use of (generative) AI have skyrocketed. Organizations in all sectors are busy discovering and developing applications of AI.

In the cultural sector as well, many possible applications are conceivable. From indexing and analyzing heritage collections to increasing accessibility to cultural offerings and optimizing business operations. At the same time, there are risks and downsides to using AI, such as bias in the data.

AI Exploration

DEN sees AI as one of the digital technologies that organizations can apply in their digital transformation. Together with and for the sector, we are looking for valuable and responsible ways to do so.

To gain insight into the current state, future expectations, and support needs regarding AI in the cultural sector, DEN conducted an exploration. This exploration helps DEN and other organizations develop the right offerings.

The AI exploration consists of two parts:

  1. A quantitative study through an online questionnaire among 215 cultural professionals. The study was conducted by DEN in December ‘23 and January ‘24.
  2. Three meetings in February and March ‘24 in which, using various work forms, the current state of AI in the cultural sector, future expectations, and support needs were addressed.
