Digital leadership is the ability to effectively navigate the rapidly changing society and leverage digital technologies. It involves understanding and responding to the rapid changes brought about by digital innovation.
Digital leadership is a component of leadership, with a focus on the specific competencies needed to shape the digital transformation process of the organization. This requires a well-thought-out (digital) strategy with an integrated approach that involves all parts of the organization step by step.
Characteristics of Digital Leaders
Digital leaders are proactive in identifying and leveraging opportunities offered by technological developments. They understand digital trends, customer behavior, and market dynamics, enabling them to make informed decisions and develop digital strategies that align with the organization's objectives. Digital leaders actively seek network collaboration within and outside the sector to realize their ambitions.

"Now is the time for cultural organizations to take the lead in these digital developments. By taking digital leadership seriously, you can actively contribute to a more inclusive, innovative, and audience-focused cultural landscape. Not as a byproduct, but as a reinforcement of your social and artistic mission."
Digital leadership is about creating support and mobilizing people to work together on the opportunities of digitization. The digital leader knows how to foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning within the organization. This requires effective communication skills to inspire and motivate teams, as well as implementing changes.
Why Digital Leadership is Needed Now
To remain relevant to current and new audiences and to increase the resilience of the organization and the sector, digital transformation is also urgent and inevitable for the cultural sector. This involves an integrated approach, where all parts of the organization are involved, from developing and presenting audience programs to operations.
Existing beliefs that sometimes underestimate the role of digital in culture are no longer tenable in the advanced digital society. Curiosity and openness to new ideas are crucial to making the transition.
This process of digital transformation requires digital leadership competencies to mobilize people to jointly develop the organization. Then the organization will be able to seize the opportunities of new technological developments and translate them into new value(s) and business models across the various components of the cultural organization (productions, education, services, exhibitions, platforms, social media, etc.). Moreover, the organization will then be able to increase its impact on today's and tomorrow's audiences and society as a whole.
Collaboration plays a crucial role: how can the organization increase its impact in collaboration with others, not only in the areas of development and presentation but also in areas such as finance. The challenge for the digital leader is how he/she can stimulate this process, inspire the organization, and guide it through this change.
